USF Commencement to Feature Board of Health Commissioner

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — The University of Saint Francis is honoring the university’s graduates and hosting Deborah A. McMahan, M.D., Health Commissioner of Fort Wayne-Allen County during its 2018 commencement ceremony on May 5 at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
Deborah A. McMahan, M.D. was appointed Health Commissioner of Fort Wayne-Allen County in May 2000. In her role, she works to spread the department’s mission of promoting healthy lifestyles and preventing injury and disease throughout Allen County.
An Indiana native, Dr. McMahan has spent most of her professional life working in health and human services. She earned her B.S. from Purdue University in 1986 and her medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1990. Following residency training in internal medicine, she completed a research fellowship with the Regenstrief Institute in Indianapolis.
Dr. McMahan is a state-licensed physician and a member of the Fort Wayne Medical Society. She is a member of the Board of Trustees for the Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne, the Urban League, and Associated Churches of Fort Wayne and Allen County. She is also on the advisory boards for Neighborhood Health Clinics, Manchester University College of Pharmacy, Allen County Juvenile Justice Center and the Healthcare Access Program.
Also during the May 5 ceremony, USF will award honorary doctor of humane letters degrees to local businessman John V. Tippman Sr. and World War II veteran Robert J. Heiny.
University of Saint Francis offers more than 70 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs through the School of Health Sciences, School of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Keith Busse School of Business and Entrepreneurial Leadership and School of Creative Arts. In addition to its traditional programs, USF designs focused curricula for working adults in Fort Wayne, Crown Point and online. In 2016, the University of Saint Francis expanded its presence to downtown Fort Wayne. USF Downtown houses the university’s business and music technology programs while offering enhanced internship and networking opportunities for students. The University of Saint Francis campus experience includes 16 athletic programs boasting two individual and four team NAIA national championships, and is recognized as an NAIA Five-Star Champion of Character institution. Approximately 2,300 students from a broad geographic region attend USF.
