POSITION TITLE: TRIO Instructor/Counselor 

 

DEPARTMENT: TRIO Student Support Services 

 

POSITION STATUS: FT, 12-month 

 

POSITION REPORTS TO: Director, TRIO SSS 

 

JOB SUMMARY:  

Under the direction of the Director of the TRIO Student Support Services program, the instructor/counselor will serve as case manager for the students in the SSS program. 

 

Major Responsibilities/Activities 

  • Assist in ensuring that the objectives as outlined in the grant are met including: 
  • Persistence Rates 
  • Good Academic Standing Rates 
  • Graduation Rates 
  • Assist in providing services that address the goals and objectives of TRIO SSS as follows: 
  • In coordination with Academic and Career Development Center (ACDC) and faculty, monitors participants’ academic performance 
  • Assist the ACDC tutorial Staff and faculty to provide tutoring services as required for SSS students, particularly in remedial and gateway courses 
  • Along with the Academic Advisors and the Registrar’s Office, provide advice in course selection and assistance in registration 
  • In cooperation with ACDC staff, Financial Aid, and the Registrar’s Office, develop a comprehensive plan of study by the end of the first year of SSS participation 
  • Introduce basic study skills and academic resources available at the university 
  • Along with Financial Aid and USF faculty, provide counseling on federal student financial aid programs and their requirements 
  • Provide annual mandatory workshops and information on financial and economic literacy 
  • In cooperation with the Director of Career Development provide activities to promote graduate and professional school attendance 
  • Provide counseling on personal and academic matters 
  • In conjunction with the Director of Academic Advising, provide career counseling and assessment 
  • Along with Student Life and the College of Arts, Sciences and Business (CASB), coordinate cultural activities 
  • Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

Education  

  • Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field required (e.g., Education, Counseling, Behavioral Science, or similar field); Master’s degree preferred. 

 

Experience   

  • Successful counseling experience in a similar program. 
  • Successful experience in a similar program as an instructor or tutor preferred. 
  • Prior successful experience in working with students who will be served by the SSS project. 
  • One to three years demonstrated experience in higher education  

 

Other Qualifications 

  • Demonstrates a background of having faced the unique challenges of being a first generation and/or low­ income student. 

  

Knowledge and Skills 

  • Appropriate computer skills and knowledge with a minimum knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Office Suite 
  • Demonstrate personal characteristics of the type to ensure success of students in the 555 project.
