FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Haitian drummer Bill Nathan and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Orphanage founder Father Andre Sylvestre will speak at the next USF Science Seminar.
The seminar will begin at noon Friday, Oct. 11 in in the Parkview Physicians Group Auditorium, Room 226 of Achatz Hall of Science and John and Toni Murray Research Center, 2701 Spring St. The event is free.
Sylvestre will provide an update on the orphanage that Formula for Life has been financially helping. A group of faculty, students and others from USF also make an annual mission trip to help in Haiti.
The main speaker, Nathan, is a hand drummer who will talk about his journey from childhood restavek (slave), surviving the 2010 earthquake and helping young men and the disabled in Haiti. While a slave, Nathan learned to hand drum on a five-gallon bucket as he gathered water for the family that “kept” him. He has since played all over the world, including for Pope John Paul II. He served as a translator for ABC’s “Nightline” in a story about Haiti’s epidemic of child slaves. Nathan also operated an orphanage in Haiti.
