About the School of Professional Studies

The School’s Mission Statement:

The School of Professional Studies began with 2005-06 academic year with the following mission statement: Developing scholar-practitioners who are integrated through service with their communities. The School reviewed and revised its mission statement spring 2008. The School‘s new mission statement is: Preparing scholar-practitioners who serve their communities, guided by Franciscan values and intellectual tradition.

The School’s Heritage Statement:

What is now known as the School of Professional Studies is the result of bringing together three distinct Departments of Education, Psychology and Counseling, and Social Work. The common thread for these departments is service provided to the community. This service to community component is reiterated in the University of Saint Francis’ mission statement: “Rooted in the Catholic and Franciscan traditions of Faith and Reason, the University of Saint Francis engages a diverse community in learning, leadership and service.” The School has strong connections to schools, hospitals, mental health and counseling centers, and other agencies in the region. Each of the departments within the school has grown. The Department of Education offers dual and triple licensure in its undergraduate education programs for teacher training. In addition, a graduate program in Intense Intervention was added. The Department of Psychology and Counseling added a graduate program as well as a certificate program in Pastoral Counseling. Finally, the Department of Social Work offers a CSWE accredited BSW Program and an Associate of Arts in Social Welfare.  Additionally, the Department offers four minors to majors and non majors: Diversity Studies, Child Welfare and Advocacy, Introductory Forensic Social Work Practice, and Gerontology and a minor in Social Work to non BSW majors. We strive to deliver an exceptional curriculum designed to prepare our graduates for highly competent and ethical social work practice. It is also important to us that our graduates are more than adequately prepared for graduate education particularly for the MSW degree.

The School of Professional Studies (SoPS) is one of five academic schools that comprise the University of Saint Francis. Encompassing the Education, Psychology and Counseling, and Social Work departments, SoPS offers a broad array of majors taught by faculty who are experts in their discipline, many of whom still practice. Within the school you will find the following undergraduate courses of study:
