USF hosting traveling Society of Illustrators exhibition
Oct. 23, 2012 FORT WAYNE, Ind.—The University of Saint Francis will host a traveling exhibition by the New York Society of Illustrators in the Weatherhead Gallery, Rolland Center for Art and Visual Communication off Leesburg Road from Nov. 23 through Dec. 20. An opening reception will take place in the gallery on Nov. 23 from 6-9 p.m.
The Society of Illustrators annual travel show features 46 of the most outstanding works created throughout the year. Based on a juried competition and originally exhibited at the Museum of American Illustration at the Society of Illustrators in New York City, this selection goes on to tour around the country.
The show is divided into six categories: Sequential/Series, Uncommissioned, Editorial, Book, Advertising, Institutional and Moving Image. Works in the exhibition have appeared in magazine and newspaper publications, adult and children’s books, calendars, theater posters, fashion labels, cd and album art and advertisements for major corporations. Featured artists include Steve Brodner, Marc Burckhardt, Kali Ciesemier, John Cuneo, John Hendrix, Yuko Shimizu, Brian Stauffer, Jillian Tamaki, Sam Weber and JooHee Yoon.
In conjunction with this show, the Goldfish Gallery will have an exhibition by nationally recognized illustrator Frank Liljegren. Liljegren was a commercial illustrator in New York in the 1950s and 1960s. He kept many of his original illustrations, used for novel paperbacks and magazines. This portfolio of over 20 finished works and samples of preliminary studies, photographs and source material was donated by the artist to the School of Creative Arts. This will mark the unveiling of this unique and comprehensive collection that defined how commercial illustration was produced in the past.
Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday from 1-5 p.m. Call (260) 399.8064 for more information. The gallery will be closed Thursday and Friday, Nov. 28 and 29, for Thanksgiving.
