Paying for Graduate School

The Office of Financial Aid and your graduate counselors want to help you fund your graduate school education. We can work with you individually to discuss your options. If you have questions about graduate financial aid, or would like additional information about any of the following options, please contact your graduate counselor.

The university offers limited financial assistance to graduate students through:

  • Graduate student assistantships
  • Graduate scholarships
  • Federal loans
  • Alumni second degree discount

Graduate Student Assistantships

Enrolled, degree-seeking graduate students are eligible to apply for a graduate assistantship. These assistantships are available to students in all programs (with the exception of the Physician Assistant program or Virtual Campus programs) and require 10 hours of work per week in the assigned area. The graduate assistantship is awarded in the amount of $2500 per semester.  If you are unable to meet the requirements of the graduate assistantship, the award is prorated by the number of weeks in the semester completed.  To apply for a graduate assistantship, complete the online Graduate Assistantship Application or download and submit the paper Graduate Assistantship Application.

Graduate Scholarships

All USF graduate students may apply for one-semester need-based scholarships. To apply for a graduate scholarship, complete the online Graduate Scholarship Application. These scholarships are available to students in all programs not already receiving discounted tuition.

Federal Loans

Students need to file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to find out if they qualify for graduate federal loans. When you file, please make sure you use our school code, 001832. More information about filing the FAFSA can be found on our Financial Aid website.

Alumni Second Degree Discount

USF has worked hard in evaluating the Alumni Second Degree Discount to make improvements for all of our alumni who are eligible for the discount.  As a result, the Alumni Second Degree Discount will now be a new tuition rate students will be billed at rather than an award applied to the bill through financial aid processing.  Alumni who have received a Bachelor’s or master’s degree at USF, and enroll in one of our Master’s Degree programs, will automatically receive a substantial tuition discount.

 What this means for you:

  • Alumni will not be required to complete an application to receive the discount.
  • There will be no delay in receiving the discount since you will not need to apply for financial aid to have the discount applied.
  • Other scholarships and discounts offered through USF still cannot be stacked on top of this discount.
