Learning Is Forever Series
Best Practices in Education
The Department of Education is excited to announce the creation of this new series specifically designed to enhance teaching strategies and skills and promote life-long learning. All workshops are held on the USF campus.
Literacy Workshop: Descriptions and Dates
Title: "Using Mentor Texts and Writing Circles to Improve Student Writing"
Audience: Elementary / Middle School
Description: We all have
our favorite children’s books that we read over and over again with every new
group of students we teach. What makes these books so compelling and so
loveable? Explore the author’s craft as we dig deeper into why we are
drawn to these books and how they can inform and improve our students’ writing.
The use of mentor texts and writing circles encourage students to view an
author’s work through the lens of a writer. Providing purposeful lessons
targeting specific elements of an author’s craft and the traits of good writing
can help students take steps toward trying new techniques in their own writing.
As an accompaniment to purposeful implementation of mentor texts, students may
also engage in writing circles to encourage and guide them to more effective
writing. In this dynamic and fast-paced workshop, classroom-proven
strategies will be modeled to engage participants in the use of mentor texts
and writing circles that may be transferred to their own classrooms. Comprehensive
resources will be provided, and teachers will leave equipped with a renewed
passion for teaching writing.
