Michelangelo’s Pieta, now in Saint Peter’s in Rome, is one of the most famous sculptures in Western art. Less well known is the Pieta he was carving for his own tomb. Michelangelo’s engagement with this theme encompasses his entire career. Just days before his death at the age of eighty-nine, he was working on yet another rendition of the subject.
